Student storage in Cape Town starts at R900 per month for a 6m² unit at Storage Spot, and that one size stores a whole res room: boxes, bedding, books, your desk and the mini-fridge, with space to spare. Store for the full summer vacation (late November to early February), and the total comes to about R2,700. Split that with two friends, and you’ve each paid R900 for the entire break. Your stuff is safe behind 24-hour security while you’re home in Joburg, Durban or wherever the holidays take you.
Here’s exactly what it costs, what fits, and how to pay as little as possible.
Student Storage Prices at a Glance
Storage Spot prices units by size, and students almost always need the smallest one.
| Unit size | Dimensions | Price | Roughly holds |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6m² | 2m x 3m | From R900 per month | A res room or studio: boxes, small furniture, appliances |
| 12m² | 4m x 3m | From R1200 per month | A shared digs: two or three students’ belongings |
| 18m² | 6m x 3m | From R1700 per month | A full student house between leases |
The Total for the Vac, Not Just the Monthly Price
Nobody budgets a vac by the month; students want the total cost. At the current 6m² from-price:
| Break | How long | Total | Split 3 ways |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summer vac (late Nov – early Feb) | ±3 months | ±R2,700 | ±R900 each |
| June–July break | 1–2 months | R900 – R1,800 | R300 – R600 each |
| Gap between res move-out and digs move-in | 1 month | R900 | R300 each |
Because terms are flexible and monthly, you only pay for the gap between your move-out and move-in dates with no fixed contract and no paying rent on an empty room just to keep your things in it.
When Taking Everything Home Isn’t an Option
Here’s the part nobody says out loud: for a lot of students, “just take it home” doesn’t work. Your bedroom became the home office. Your sister claimed your room the week you left. Your parents downsized. Or home is a flight away and the airline wants R500 for every extra bag. If your whole life has to fit somewhere that isn’t your mom’s lounge, a 6m² unit is the cheapest room you’ll ever rent and it never asks when you’re coming to fetch your stuff.
What Students Can Store
Most of a res room is storage-friendly: boxed books and kitchenware, a desk and chair, a single bed, bedding in vacuum bags, bikes, surfboards and hockey kit. Appliances are fine too just clean and defrost the mini-fridge first and leave the door slightly open, or it will smell like a biology experiment by February. What’s not allowed: anything perishable, flammable or alive. No food, as that’s how storage places get rats, and we’re not that kind of storage place. Full list in our post on what you can store in a storage unit. Every unit has power and lighting, which helps when you’re fetching textbooks after dark.
Getting Your Stuff There Without a Car
Storage Spot is on Potsdam Road in Milnerton (Killarney Gardens), just off the N7, about 20 minutes from town and an easy run from Tableview, Parklands and Blouberg. One bakkie trip covers a res room, so bribe a friend with petrol money and lunch, or a small mover can do it in a single load. Coming with a full load? Weekends are the busy days, arrive early or phone ahead on 0860 00 77 00 so the team can have things ready for you.
For the Parents Booking from Another City
If you’re the one paying from Joburg, Pretoria or KZN: you can arrange the whole thing remotely. Phone or email, and Karen Bryant and the on-site team will confirm the unit, send the invoice, and let you know when everything is locked up. On security, we’d rather be straight with you: we’re in an industrial area, which is how we can charge R900 where the fancy storage parks charge double. It’s also why security is layered: access control at the gate, cameras, 24-hour security and solid concrete-panel units. As one long-time customer put it in their Google review: “Despite the location, not even once did I have a problem with the security of my belongings.”
How to Book and When to Reserve
Booking takes a few minutes: call 0860 00 77 00, email info@storagespot.co.za, or book online. Demand spikes as exams finish in November and again in June so please reserve a week or two before you move, earlier at year-end. On packing day: label every box, keep chargers, documents and valuables with you, and ask about padlocks when you book. Our Student Storage service page has the full student details.
